What are science-based targets (SBT)?
Science-Based Targets (SBT) are commitments to reduce GHG emissions in line with levels required by climate science. Targets should align with decarbonisation rates consistent with limiting global warming preferably to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement.
Core requirements
- Inclusion of Scope 1 and 2 emissions in targets
- Coverage of relevant GHGs per the GHG Protocol
- 5–15 year timeframe from public announcement
- Alignment with well below 2°C / preferably 1.5°C
- Scope 3 screening and Scope 3 target when required
- Annual corporate emissions inventory and reporting
